City recognises tenants who pay their way

The City recognised 50 of its Manenberg Community Residential Unit (CRU) tenants who have consistently paid their rent over the past few years. The tenants, aged between 70 and 83 years old, are an important part of our public housing success. Without this rental income, the City would not be able to repair and maintain these units. The City’s Public Housing Department is investing in maintenance and repairs of more than R1,2 billion over the next few years.
‘This event marks the start of many similar events to be held across the metro to thank our tenants who pay their way. Loyal tenants who pay their rent regularly are so important to the City, and it is especially our older tenants who are setting the example and understand that without that income, we cannot properly maintain our units. We are eager to reinvigorate a culture of payment among our tenants, especially the younger generations. With the rental income received, the City is able to effect repairs and maintenance to its affordable housing units. More than 39 000 tenants and their families live in the City’s CRUs. We encourage tenants to please make regular rental payments to the City.
'It is important for tenants to make sure their rental payment amount is paid regularly and on time each month. We encourage tenants to make use of online payment options. If tenants are not able to pay, they are reminded that help is available and the City provides assistance to those who qualify through the indigent support and rental housing relief on offer.
